The Fulton County School System and the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will conduct its annual Scoliosis Screening Program in all Fulton County Middle Schools to find children with suspected curvature of the spine.  Ridgeview will conduct this screening on Friday, February 5.  The procedure is simple, and includes a 30 second test in which a screener looks at the child's back in the standing position and in several positions.  We are sending home a letter and a more detailed explanation of the screening process.  Parents who DO NOT want their student screened are the only ones who need to sign the letter and return it to school by Friday, February 5.

Thanks from the Media Center
Thank you to the PTA, students, and teachers for making our Scholastic Book Fair such a huge success!  We sold $5,548.00 in merchandise and received $3,399.00 of profit towards new books and teacher resources for the Media Center!  We also raised $266.32 for One for Books which was matched by Scholastic.  This money went directly back to students in free books and new books for the Media Center.  Ms. Wickline is so grateful to the PTA for not only running the entire fair, but also for allowing our Media program to keep 100% of the profits!

Picking Students up at 4:45pm
Parents, if your child does not ride the sweep bus, it is imperative that you pick your student up promptly at 4:45pm when after school activities have concluded.  Please note that we have had to change the pick up area to the carpool lane on the Trimble Road side of the building.  The traffic in front of the school became too congested and not safe for our students.

Ridgeview is a Title I School
By being a Title I school, RCS receives federal funds that are targeted to bridge the gap between low-income students and other students. This supplemental funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education to help meet the needs of at-risk and low income students.  Our school is receiving “targeted assistance” (funds going directly to those at risk students) and is applying for school-wide entitlement for next school year.
RCS also receives ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) Stimulus money to improve academic performance.  This money has been used to fund Mr. Como, our math connection teacher, Extended Learning,  and Saturday School, among other programs.

Ridgeview is a Clean Air School!!  Vehicle Exhaust Affects our Children
Children breathe 50% more air per pound than adults.
Children are closer to the ground, and therefore closer to vehicle tailpipes.
Asthma is the most common chronic illness in children and the cause  of most school absences.  Exposure to car emissions can aggravate children’s asthma symptoms and make it harder do breathe.
You can help by turning your engine off while waiting for your child at school!  By not idling, you keep three pounds of pollution per month from going into the air-helping us all breathe easier.

Carpool Instructions
When coming into the Carpool line from Trimble Road, please enter the first driveway at the school (the driveway adjacent to the tennis courts) go straight through the parking lot, past the entrance to the track and field area, all the way around the front side of the school.  Turn right at the junction of the access road, which will put you on the backside of the school.  Going through the line correctly will enable you to see the reader board which will help you stay on top of school events and helping with the safety of our students.

Ridgeview is a Clean Air School!! We are Part of the Solution to Air Pollution!
This fall, Ridgeview is launching a no-idling campaign to protect the health of our students and the health of our environment.  In addition to restricting idling on school grounds by school buses, we are also asking parents to adopt a no-idling policy for personal vehicles.
Soon, cars that are in the carpool lanes for morning drop-off or afternoon pick-up will be greeted with our new no-idling signs:  No Idling—Young Lungs at Work.  The No-Idling Zone is part of Ridgeview’s Clean Air Schools program, in partnership with the Clean Air Campaign.

The Middle Year’s Program at RCS
Aims & Objectives
The International Baccalaureate Organization has developed a list of Aims and Objectives for each of the eight disciplines included in the Middle Years Program (Language A – English, Language B, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Technology, Arts). These are very broad and integrate easily with our state and county objectives. You will notice these listed in the Course Outlines your student brings home. The Aims and Objectives provide guidelines to ensure that our students will be able to compete with students from around the world.

The Middle Year’s Program at RCS
Unit Questions

In each subject we divide the information to be taught into academic units. As often as possible, teachers collaborate and integrate information from other subjects into their unit. This creates an interdisciplinary unit. For example, teachers could create a unit of study that stresses the importance of units of measurement. All teachers could include information about how units are applied in their subject. So, all teachers could discuss units and measurement in the context of their subject. When a unit is created, a unit question is also created to provide a framework for the instruction and to challenge the students to struggle to find possible answers. A sample question for this unit could be “How big is big, how long is long and how far is far?”

An important part of each student’s education at RCS is their participation in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program.
