September 2008

Hey All,

Welcome to a new year of school and band at Ridgeview Charter School .  The kids are getting settled in and our daily routines are starting to show progress toward really nice sounding groups.  We’ve been very fortunate to have great kid, parent and administrative support to allow us to do what is best for the kids and the band.

  •    Each year we’ve also been able to accomplish something special.  This year is no exception.  We have the LARGEST band Ridgeview (middle or high) has ever seen.  We have 153 kids this year!  By other’s standards that’s just average.  But, we’ve never had that many before.  Woo Hoo!
  •  Of course having more kids does put a strain of equipment.  We just barely have enough to put one instrument in one kid’s hands.  If something breaks, well, we’re toast.  PLEASE monitor your child’s use of school equipment carefully.  If you know somebody who owns an instrument that is collecting dust in a closet, ask them to donate it to the school.  Since we’re not for profit, it may even be a tax deduction of some kind (probably more then if they tried to sell).
  • Our first performance is Tuesday, October 21st, at 7:00 pm.  All Band Students must report by 6:15 pm.  This is a graded part of the band curriculum.
  • Intermediate Band kids:  All 6th Grade Advanced Class, 7th & 8th Grade Intermediate Classes.  After School Rehearsals are Wednesday, October 1 & 8, 3:45 – 4:45.  Attendance is required.
  • Honor Band Students/Parents (advanced 7th & 8th graders only) are reminded to get the All-State and District Band Fees in by Thursday, Sept 9th so we can register your kid for the auditions.  This is an optional activity – so you don’t have to do it…
  •  Jazz Band:  WOW!  We had a HUGE group of kids for Jazz Band last Thursday.  So, I’m going to split the group in two.  One group for the beginning Jazzers and one for the experienced Jazzers.  I’ll let the kids know at this Thursday’s rehearsal how we’re going to do it.
  •  Home Practice Records are due EVERY week from EVERY kid with the exception of 6th Grade Beginners.  Each kids should have turned in 2 so far.  The beginning 6th Graders will start practice records next week (9/8-9/12).  90 minutes = 100 grade, 80 minutes = 90 grade, etc.  Time over 90 minutes receives extra credit – 5 points per 15 minutes over 90.
  • 6th Graders’ Parents:  Please remind your kids to keep up with ALL music, music books, instrument reeds, mouthpieces, sticks, etc. - whatever applies to their instrument.  Keeping up with music seems to be very hard for percussion students.

  • All percussion students MUST have 3 sets of sticks:  Snare Drum, Acrylic Bells Mallets, and Yarn Mallets for Marimba or Vibraphone.
  • All Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe and Bassoon players MUST have a minimum of 2 working reeds at all times (3 is suggested).
  •  All Brass Players MUST have valve oil (including trombone players).

  •  Beginning Band Kids/Parents:  Please Have Patience These “Early” Days Of Learning An Instrument.  I make time to hear every kid during the week to help them with individual problems.  This takes time.  Some days move faster than others.  But, it’s very important to get the kids into good playing habits now then trying to break bad ones later.

Can you believe it - 153 band kids, 3 Concert Bands and 2 Jazz Bands.  I know this will again be a banner year for our bands.  The kids are adjusting the portable well.  Hopefully we will be back into our “new” room before long.

Thanks so much for all you help.  Sandy Springs deserved a great band programs and I’m honored that you chose to make Ridgeview a part of that.

Mike Gibson,

Director of Bands
